College, forest, and a highway through the middle
Perkinston is not a town and does not pretend to be one. It is an unincorporated stretch of Stone County either side of Highway 49, built around Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College's original campus, the one students actually live on, with pine timber and DeSoto National Forest filling in everything the highway does not. Wiggins is six miles north, McHenry a few miles south, and most of what is in between is county road, long drive, and roof under trees.
That shapes the roofing work more than any of it shapes the roofs. Properties here sit under mature pine, which means shade, needles in the valleys and gutters year round, and limbs that come down in weather that would not trouble a roof in the open. Metal earns its keep out here for exactly that reason, and we will say so when it is the better buy rather than only when it is the bigger ticket.
It also means the address is often a rural route and a mailbox rather than something a mapping app has ever been sure about. That is our problem, not yours: we would rather ring you from the end of the drive than not turn up. Thirty-five miles up from the beach sounds safe and is not. Katrina came through Stone County still carrying hurricane-force wind and took timber down across the whole county, and Zeta and Ida both crossed close enough to be felt here since. Between hurricanes it is the pines that do the work: a limb through a slope, needles damming a valley until water backs up under the shingles, and shade keeping a roof damp long enough to age it from the top down. Our inspections here read the trees as carefully as the roof, and we photograph and document everything for a claim.
