Architectural vs. 3-tab: what you're really choosing

Walk any South Mississippi neighborhood and you'll see both: flat, single-layer 3-tab shingles on older homes, and thicker, dimensional architectural shingles on almost everything roofed in the last decade. That shift happened for good reasons, but 3-tab still has a place, and knowing the difference protects you from paying for the wrong thing in either direction.

The construction difference

A 3-tab shingle is a single layer of asphalt-coated fiberglass mat, cut with notches so each strip reads as three small tabs. An architectural (also called dimensional or laminate) shingle bonds two or more layers together, creating a thicker shingle with a varied, wood-shake-style shadow line. More material means more weight, more wind resistance, and more years.

When 3-tab still makes sense

Honesty cuts both ways: on a rental property you plan to sell, a detached shed, or a budget that simply won't stretch, a properly installed 3-tab roof is better than a poorly installed anything. We'll tell you when the cheaper shingle is the right call, and when the wind rating alone should settle the argument.
