Choosing a Landmark color

The ten colors we preview, how they read on local houses, and the mistakes worth avoiding.

Color is the only part of a roof decision that is genuinely yours. Everything else, the underlayment, the flashing, the ventilation, should be decided by what the roof needs. So it is worth spending time on, and worth seeing on a house rather than on a chip.

The ten we preview

  • Cool greys: Cobblestone Gray, Georgetown Gray, Colonial Slate and Pewter.
  • Warm browns and blends: Weathered Wood, Driftwood, Heather Blend and Resawn Shake.
  • The darkest: Moire Black.
  • The outlier: Burnt Sienna, which reads red and suits very few houses, but suits those few better than anything else.

Each of the ten is shown on the same house, so you are comparing colors rather than photographs.

Matching what is already there

  • Red brick fights cool greys and sits well with Weathered Wood, Driftwood or Heather Blend.
  • White or light board and batten carries almost anything, and is where Moire Black and Colonial Slate look their best.
  • Tan or beige brick is the hardest, because a brown roof can blur into the wall. A grey with a warm cast, such as Cobblestone Gray, usually separates better.
  • If you have metal accents, a porch roof or a bay, pick the shingle to sit with the metal rather than against it.

Does a lighter roof keep the house cooler?

A lighter roof reflects more sun and a dark roof runs hotter at the surface. In a Mississippi summer that is real, but it is a smaller factor in your power bill than attic ventilation and insulation, and those are cheaper to fix. Choose the color you want to look at, then make sure the ventilation is right.

Two mistakes worth avoiding

  • Choosing from a sample board indoors. Shingle color shifts in sunlight, and it shifts again at a distance and on a pitch. Hold the sample outside, against the house.
  • Choosing a color your neighborhood covenant does not allow. Check before you fall in love with one.

We bring physical samples to every inspection, and we will hold them up against your wall before you commit to anything.

FAQ

Quick answers

What is the most popular roof color around Hattiesburg?
Greys and weathered browns dominate locally, because they sit well with both red brick and white siding, which covers most of the housing stock here. That said, popular and right for your house are different questions.
Can I see a Landmark color on a real local roof?
Where we have installed one, yes. The color visualizer shows a real Southeast Roofing roof when we have photographed that color locally, and a color preview until then. Our project map also shows completed roofs near you.
Does roof color affect resale?
A roof that clashes with the brick is noticed. Beyond that, buyers care far more about the roof's age and condition than its exact shade. Pick something that suits the house and do not overthink it.
